Wonder Woman 1984, which premieres Christmas Day on HBO Max, will naturally get the most attention this weekend; Warner Media, owned by AT&T, is betting that debuting the film at home and theaters on the same day will generate considerable love (and subs) for the aforementioned streaming service. (Warner also plans to ‘same-day’ its entire slate of 2021 films.) But there are other films debuting Friday through Sunday on the top streaming services that also deserve a look.
The new movies coming this weekend to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime include Soul, a Disney computer-animated comedy with Jamie Foxx as the voice of Joe Gardner, a music teacher whose dream of becoming a jazz musician is abruptly halted by an untimely accident. However, Joe manages to avoid the Great Beyond by squeezing himself into the Great Before where he learns how to improve his soul.

Soul, which was made by Pixar Animation Studios, was also originally slated for a theater-only debut, but Disney moved it (for free!) to its streaming service due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Also notable this weekend: Sylvie’s Love, an Amazon original movie starring Tessie Thompson as a 1950s TV producer who falls in love with a saxophonist; an extended version of Independence Day, the 1996 fantasy film starring Will Smith and a cast of thousands battling alien invaders who like to blow up things; and, yes, Wonder Woman 1984. You can learn more about the Gal Gadot sequel here.
